Year 1 are thoroughly enjoying our Speaking and Listening this week. They have described their monster to a partner or a small group of students and learnt how important it is to give a detailed description.

Minnamurra Rainforest Excursion

On Thursday we had a fantastic time exploring the Minnamurra Rainforest. We were taught how to care for the environment by:
- Walking on the pathways so that we don't step on any plants or animals
- Throwing our rubbish in the bins so that we don't introduce food that might make the animals sick
- Not swimming in the rivers so sunscreen and other products stay our of the water and it keeps clean

We noticed that the pathways were raised above the forest floor so that we protect the environment. On our walk we spotted spiders webs, ferns, butress roots, vines, strangler figs, oak trees, boulders, a river and we even saw a lyrebird. We learnt that the male lyrebird has the long curly feathers and can dance really well so that he can attract the female. It was an exhausting journey but also an amazing and rich learning experience!

Bounce was a blast this week!

Science Homework - Due Monday

We are sending home an extra sheet for homework this week which is due on Monday. In science this week we went on a Water Hunt around the school to find the water access points. It was a rich learning experience. We uncovered some fire hoses and hydrants as well as taps that have no handle. Some taps were painted purple and in the High School there are two water tanks that recycle rain water that falls on the roof. The tap in our creek is a slow release tap which helps us to save water so that we don't accidentally leave it running.

For homework we ask that you and your child choose four places where you use water at home. Draw and write the ways that you use water in those places.
The sheet below will be sent home tomorrow (Wednesday).

Bounce

Bounce is on again tomorrow. The students really enjoyed their first lesson last week. The focus was our motorbike landing position. Our feet were shoulder width apart, our knees were bent and our arms were out in front to help us balance.

Cello Lessons

Apologies for the late notice but the Cellos groups will not be having a lesson tomorrow during our String Group times. Their teacher, Bernadette, is still unwell after a scheduled operation last week. Cello students will not need their instruments tomorrow.

Excursion

A reminder that our excursion is on this Thursday 17 May. Students will need to be at school before 8:00am or they will miss the bus. We do not expect to return until 3:00pm.
Please ensure students are dressed in their Winter Sports Uniform and have recess, lunch and a drink packed in their bag.
We are looking forward to a great day.

Science

This term we are learning all about water. Where it comes from, how we use it and who/what else uses water.
As a part of our investigations the students were asked to take photos around the Junior School of places where they could find water or sources of water. They had a lot of fun with this activity.

Wednesday 23rd May

Dear Parents,

On Wednesday 23rd May it is our Junior School Athletics Carnival.
Year 1 students will be attending the carnival for part of the day, the same as at the swimming carnival. Although this means that the students will not be having their usual violin and cello lessons on this day, Mrs Dimatrovska has requested that the students still bring their instrument with them to school in the morning as she is intending to use the day to check all instruments and carry out any necessary maintenance and small repairs.
Students will then be able to collect their instrument on the Thursday when they return to school or they may leave it at school until after their Friday violin lesson.

We look forward to seeing you  at the carnival.

Homework and News

Dear Parents,

Your child's new homework booklet, complete with their weekly spelling words for the coming week, the news topics for this term and the suggested maths activities will be sent home on Monday (7 May).
In week 2, students will not be presenting news to the class, but will be preparing some simple poems (included in the homework booklet) to perform for their peers in week 3.

Monsters!

Year 1 had a blast today becoming monsters. In pairs we took turns to sculpt our partners in to monsters. Can you guess what kind of monsters we are?
